Mikel Ugarte Ramos from Oñatiarra and María Pujo Pérez from Seville have been proclaimed absolute winners in the Men’s and Women’s Middle Distance categories of the third DoubleTree Triathlon by Hilton Islantilla Beach Golf Resort, among the approximately 400 triathletes who gathered yesterday in this tourist enclave shared by the municipalities of Isla Cristina and Lepe.
Ugarte, from the Atlético San Sebastián team, completed his race in just 4h 01′ 54″, closely followed by Peru Alfonso San Ildefonso, who finished the circuit in 4h 08′ 22″. Third place on the podium was taken by Francesc Artigues Ramis, from the ANB Solagüen Labastida Triathlon Club, who finished in 4h 10′ 59″.
In the Women’s category of the Medium Distance category, the winner was María Pujol, Spanish Champion in this speciality, who stood out from the rest of her teammates by completing the circuit in 5h 02′ 21″. Pujol entered the finish line followed by Susana Román Bernet, from the Club Triatlón de Mérida, who did it in 5h 45′ 45″. Third place went to Lucía Vinagre Mateo, from the Club Atlétic Torelló, with a time trial of 5h 54′ 26″.
The gardens of the Islantilla Golf Club were the setting last night for the ceremony to present the trophies to the winners of this memorable sports day, in the presence of the President of the Islantilla Community and Mayor of Isla Cristina, Jenaro Orta, and the Deputy Mayor of Lepe, Jesús Toronjo, who were accompanied by the Director of the Islantilla Golf Resort and The Residences Islantilla flats, Antonio Ruano and Javier Fernández Medrano, respectively; as well as Conchi Yllanes, representative of Byon Sports Events, the event’s organising body. Also present at the event were representatives of the sponsoring entities and other members of the Municipal Corporations of both municipalities. The ceremony included the intervention of the paratriathlete Kini Carrasco, who had some moving words of homage to the recently disappeared triathlete from Extremadura, Diego Paredes.
The Vice-president of the Islantilla Community and First Deputy Mayor of Isla Cristina, Francisco Zamudio, highlighted “the opportunity that our destination offers to host such a high level sporting event as this triathlon, in which all the population centres of both municipalities have been involved, allowing us to show hundreds of visitors the attraction of our surroundings and the enormous possibilities of our land for organising events, as yesterday we placed Islantilla on the map of the great sporting events of Andalusia”.
For his part, Jesús Toronjo thanked “Islantilla Golf Resort, Byon Sports Events and all the sponsors of this triathlon for their enormous contribution to the consolidation of our municipalities as a benchmark for sports tourism”.
The event, organised jointly by the Islantilla Golf Resort hotel complex and the Islantilla Association in collaboration with Byon Sports Events and both Town Councils, involved the other towns in the area: Isla Cristina, La Redondela, Urbasur, La Antilla, El Terrón, Pinares and Lepe.
As for the Men’s and Women’s Olympics, the winners were the duathlete and triathlete who was the runner-up in the Spanish Middle Distance Championship in 2015, Andrés Carnevali del Castillo, and the young triathlete who won several races in the Basque Country, Maddi Marquet Ferrán, with 1h 47′ 54″ and 2h 11′ 19″ respectively. The second position was obtained by Diego Méntrida Zamarra (1h 52′ 06″) and Sandra Schenkel (2h 16′ 41″); while the third position in the podium was for José Alix (1h 55′ 13″) and Raquel Úbeda Fernández (2h 19′ 47″).
Around a hundred volunteers and a deployment of Local Police and Guardia Civil have worked hard to make this third edition a reality, whose success is largely due to their efforts and the participation of other public and private entities involved in the event as sponsors or collaborators: the Andalusian Triathlon Federation, the Provincial Council of Huelva, Aneto, Rayman, Usisa or Nutrisport. The official accommodation of the participants corresponds to the complexes included in Islantilla Golf Resort: the DoubleTree hotel by Hilton Islantilla Beach Golf Resort and The Residences flats.

The third DoubleTree Triathlon by Hilton Islantilla Beach Golf Resort is thus consolidated as the most important event on the sporting calendar of this tourist enclave. The event, which has been held in the Medium Distance and Olympic Distance categories, began with the swimming section at 14:00 on the beach in front of the Islantilla Beach Club, next to the Barriada de Pescadores, and then went on to climb on two wheels and complete a cycling circuit which culminated in a race on foot through the most emblematic places of Islantilla.
This sporting event forms part of the competition calendar of the Andalusian Triathlon Federation, and has been carried out in accordance with the strictest health safety measures imposed by the entity’s anti-COVID19 protocol.
